Zendalia woke with a gasp, pain pressing against her chest. Those images had returned in her dreams, bringing the nightmare closer. The colors had been vibrant, though she doubted that she’d be able to see that clearly if she were really in the deep soundings.

Blinking as fast as she could, Zendalia forced herself to focus on the familiar room around her. Her coral walls and the softness of her moss bed beneath her. But the darkness of the nightmare lingered in her mind and her heart.

Taking a deep shuddering breath, Zendalia knew she wasn’t alone. It wasn’t weight exactly, but a sensation of presence. Tilting her chin down, she found Neyon resting on her chest, a tentacle gently brushing away at water in front of her cheeks.

Only then did Zendalia realize the octopus—her octopus—had been swishing away the tears she had spilled.

“Thank you.” Zendalia’s voice was rough and tired.

Neyon rose off Zendalia’s chest and spun around in a perfect circle of color and beauty.

Zendalia smiled.

At least she had Neyon, especially for when her father was away. She hoped he would return soon. She’d like to know if she really were the only one who could see the ethereal companion she had found with her soul stone.

“Let’s go test some theories. Father would be pleased to know I didn’t just rely on one reaction. What do you think?” Zendalia pushed herself upright from her bed and gave herself a similar twirl to what Neyon had done earlier.

She laughed as her companion joined her again.

It might not have been her mother, but the ache in her chest left from her mother’s presence faded just a little. Neyon had made her smile. A real smile. And she had laughed. It sounded so strange in her ears but so nice. She had missed it. Still, worry ate at the corner of her mind.

Did moving on, did enjoying life, mean she didn’t love her mother as much as she should?

Zendalia floated, hovering in the pockets of water surrounding her as Neyon swam close to her face.

She watched, not moving and hardly daring to breathe as Neyon lifted two tentacles, one to either side of her face. That sensation of their tingling presence brushed her cheeks.

Zendalia stared into those liquid black eyes and warmth spread through her. Warmth and a knowledge that love was not finite. There was enough love in her for her mother and so many other mermaids.

“What would I do without you, Neyon? I’ve barely known you, but I feel like you’ve been here through everything.”

Neyon’s presence rushed into Zendalia’s chest, and she chuckled. A hug, tingling and filled with warmth, surrounded her.

Zendalia’s stomach growled out in protest.

“Let’s go find Soulara and get her to make us some breakfast.” Zendalia began moving, and Neyon took up the space beside her, swimming with such fluidity that their beauty flicked through Zendalia once more.

“Do you need to eat?” She turned her head to watch them as they responded with a shake of their head.

“Huh, well you’ve got to be the easiest pet ever.
